Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig - 2022 Bahn-Museum Nürnberg 2022 Kunstlabor Munich 2022 Portugal: Sintra is a town, a municipality, and a mountain range really close to Lisbon. It is really quite green because of its location. We only spent a day in Lisbon this time. The fabulous 9-Euro-Ticket allowed Germany-wide travel in regional trains for three months in 2022. I used it a lot: Cottbus Barnim Gärten der Welt Berlin Botanischer Garten Berlin Willy-Brandt-Museum Karlshorst

Belgrade, Serbia I dodged the Christmas bullet in 2023 by visiting Belgrade. I was lucky to catch the Eternal Derby between Partizan and Red Star, tour the excellent Museum of Yugoslavia (including Tito’s grave), and indulge in food and craft beer. Bonn, Germany In 2023 I visited Bonn. I noticed some nice Deutsche Bahn ads and enjoyed many exhibits at the #DeutschlandDigital temporary exhibition in Bonn’s Haus der Geschichte. Malta and Cyprus November offers mild weather—perfect for visiting Malta and Cyprus. ...

Shanghai Shanghai, China’s most international city, provided a fascinating introduction to this vast and complex country. Highlights included the Site of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party - where we found ourselves the only foreign visitors - the futuristic high-rise district of Pudong across the river, and the historic Bund waterfront with its colonial-era architecture. Taiwan Taiwan is delightfully navigable by rail. We made a compact four-stop loop: Taichung (central hub and starting point), Tainan (historic temples and mellow streets), Hualien (gateway to dramatic east-coast scenery), and Taipei (the energetic capital that ties it all together). ...

Fürth Fürth is Nuremberg’s immediate neighbor, way smaller and often overlooked. I saw their football club battle Hertha — two greats from the 20s, albeit the 1920s — in an entertaining 3:3 draw. The museum to see is the Ludwig Erhard Zentrum about the father of Germany’s Wirtschaftswunder; it also had a special exhibition on Fürth’s other famous son Henry Kissinger. Last but not least, there’s some good subculture, e.g. Kopf und Kragen. And of course it is the place where public transportation started in Germany! ...

Cote d’Azur What a big difference in weather in late March between Germany and Nice: the aptly named Cote d’Azur is still affordable, with sunshine and mild temperatures. I stayed in Nice and explored the region by train. The area offers stunning mountains, blue skies, sea views, decent museums, and good food. Monaco is, well, Monaco, but I was lucky to be there during the first papal visit since the 16th century, a rare event that left me wondering: why Monaco? A fantastic destination!
